We’re going to take an in-depth look at the fundamentals of making great smoothies as well as the only recipe for a Strawberry Banana Smoothie you ever need to know (unless you’re dead set on becoming a Smoothie Master!).
How to Make a Smoothie – The Fundamentals
Basic smoothies consist of two things: fruit and liquid.
If the fruit isn’t in frozen form, then you’ll need to add some ice to that list to give the smoothie its cold, milkshake-like consistency.
Any kind of fruit is fair game for putting into a smoothie, but some fruits work better than others.
Banana is the king of smoothie fruits because of the way it blends into a creamy consistency that is practically responsible for the smoothness that led to the name “Smoothie.”
Although it IS technically possible to craft smoothies without bananas (and I have done so many times), banana-less smoothies tend to taste as if they’re missing something.
Beyond banana, other extremely wonderful fruit additions to smoothies include virtually any type of berry, creamy tropical fruits like mango and papaya and creamy stone fruits like peaches or nectarines.
Apples and pears can technically be added to smoothies, but you have to be basically a smoothie ninja because it’s very easy for your smoothie to lose it smoothness and become grainy and too liquidy.
For the liquid in smoothies, almost anything goes. If you use water, your smoothie will tend to taste, well, watered down. It’ll be more bland and less powerful, but that can be a good option if you’re feeding your smoothie to children or to people who are very sugar sensitive.
The most common smoothie liquids include orange juice, coconut water and milk or yogurt.
If you want to go for a more powerful, nutritive blend you can use Organic Goji Berry Juice or Organic Acai Juice
. I sometimes add a little Organic Noni Juice
for that extra super food addition.
How to Make a Smoothie – The Technique
Making a smoothie is incredibly easy, takes almost no time at all and can even be fun as you embrace the spirit of experimentation.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Get a good blender
- Peel one or two bananas and add them to the blender
- Add your favorite frozen fruit–about 1 cup
- Add some orange juice or other juice
- Fire up your blender and let it run until all the ingredients are blended completely
The only thing you need to look out for in making smoothies is to have the right amount of liquid present so that your blender can do its job.
If you don’t have enough liquid present, the blender won’t be able to create its vortex of blending in which all the ingredients swirl together. But if you add too much liquid, your smoothie will lose its thickness and potentially its flavor balance as well.
Find that happy medium!
No need to be scared, though! Experimentation is the best teacher when it comes to making great smoothies!
The Only Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe You’ll Ever Need
Now that we’ve looked at the fundamentals of making smoothies, let’s dive into the most famous smoothie of them all–the Strawberry Banana Smoothie.
This smoothie boasts the perfect blend of flavors. The creamy smooth sweetness of ripe banana meets the tart sting of strawberry. And the two flavors blend together on a bed of your preferred liquid.
In this recipe, I’ll include two options: the non-dairy option uses orange juice while the dairy option uses yogurt.
Ingredients
- Two Ripe Bananas
- 1 Large Handful of Frozen Strawberries*
- 3/4 Cup Orange Juice (or 1/2 Cup of Milk and 1 cup of Yogurt for the dairy version)
*whenever possible, purchase organic strawberries as strawberries are one of the foods highest in pesticides when grown conventionally
What to Do
- Put all ingredients in blender
- Fire up the blender on low at first, then increase speed
- Keep an eye on the contents in the blender. If needed, add a slight amount of additional liquid.
- Serve immediately
Now, there are infinite variations that we can bring in to keep things interesting, but that’s the easiest, most classic version of the famous Strawberry Banana Smoothie you’ll ever encounter. Every Strawberry Banana Smoothie recipe beyond that improvises on that foundation.
